Ice skating rinks and arenas in the Reno and Lake Tahoe area offer fun family activities throughout the winter. I advise calling ahead before heading out to one of the rinks - open hours can vary due to factors such as ice and / or weather conditions.

Ice Skating Rinks in Reno and Carson City

Rink on the River - next to the Truckee River in downtown Reno, Nevada.
Reno's outdoor rink is a great place for families and groups to enjoy a day of ice skating fun. Reno's city Christmas tree is right next to the rink, making for a festive setting.

Arlington Square Ice Rink - in downtown Carson City, Nevada.
This outdoor rink is in the heart of Nevada's capital city. It's in operation from November 23, 2012 to January 21, 2013. Hours are Monday to Thursday, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Sundays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is $7 for ages 13 and up, $5 for ages 3 to 12. Skate rental is $3 per session.

Ice Skating Rinks in the Lake Tahoe Area

Olympic Ice Pavillion - High Camp at Squaw Valley USA.
Overlooking Lake Tahoe, this is undoubtedly the most scenic ice rink in all of the Sierra Nevada. You get here by riding Squaw Valley's Cable Car. There are numerous skating options available, so be sure to check the website for details and pricing. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call (530) 452-4000 for current information about Olympic Ice Pavillion operations.

Village at Northstar Skating Rink - at Northstar California, south of Truckee on Highway 267.
Outdoor ice skating rink next to the resort. Ice skating is free for all, with a fee of $5 to rent skates if you need them. Hours are Sunday to Thursday, 12 noon to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 12 noon to 9 p.m. Call (530) 562-3689 to confirm rink operating hours.

South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena - in the city of South Lake Tahoe.
This indoor ice skating rink offers a full range of services, from open ice skating sessions, to figure skating and hockey lessons. Call (530) 542-6262 to confirm fees and hours. Last time I checked, the website was being overhauled and information was not available. The South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena is located at 1176 Rufus Allen Blvd.

Truckee Ice Rink - The Truckee Ice Rink is located in Truckee River Regional Park, half a mile south of downtown Truckee on Old Brockway Road. It is open seven days a week from November 23, 2012, through March 3, 2013, depending on the weather. There are skate rentals, a snack bar, and lessons available. Skate rentals are $2. Daily fees for district residents are $5 for adults, $4 for kids. Non-residents are $6. For more information, call (530) 582-7720.
