If you are interested in learning cross country skiing or skate, check out the lessons offered at ski areas and resorts in the Sierra Nevada near Reno and around Lake Tahoe. When deep, fluffy powder covers the Sierra Nevada, both beginners and seasoned skiers plenty of "ego snow" on which to hone their skills and learn how to turn winter's chill into fun times on the trails. Most resorts have programs for both children and adults, so bring the family and learn to track the trails together. Snowshoeing is also offered at many crosscountry ski areas. If cross-country isn't your thing, the Sierra around Lake Tahoe has one of the largest concentrations of top downhill ski resorts in the nation.

Spooner Lake Cross Country Ski Area
- Spooner Lake did not renew its permit with Nevada State Parks for the 2012 - 2013 season and will not be open. There will be no trail grooming, but this part of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park will still be open to crosscountry skiing and snow play.
