The job of the Nevada Commission on Tourism is to promote the Silver State's attractions to visitors and those looking for vacation destinations. To get a handle on literally hundreds of potential destinations, they have divided Nevada into tourism areas referred to as "Territories," even though the names of a couple of them don't include that word.
It dawned on someone at the Nevada Commission on Tourism that their promotional efforts were neglecting a big group of potential tourists - Nevada residents. To address this shortcoming, they launched the Discover Your Nevada contest to let Nevadans themselves choose the best places to visit in the Silver State. The contest was announced by Governor Brian Sandoval and Lt. Governor Brian Krolicki on March 1, 2012, at a press conference in the May Museum at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno.
Out of nearly 600 nominations, the online voting whittled the top treasures down to to two in each tourism area. Here are the first and second place choices in each area of the state.
