I discovered thrift stores when I was in college, a newlywed, and broke. Thrift stores are fun and save you a bunch of money. Our Reno / Tahoe thrift stores are a motley lot, but that's part of the fun. Poke around and you are guaranteed to find something useful. Another plus; stores run by non-profit organizations do not charge sales tax.
Easter Seals Thrift Store

The Easter Seals store is the one I'm most familiar with. It's big and has a ton of stuff, particularly clothes. I found a virtually unused Carhartt shirt for $5 that would have been at least $50 retail.

Junkee Clothing Exchange
Junkee is a used, or recycled, clothing and decorating store set up in a recycled building in the funky shopping area along Virginia Street, just south of downtown Reno.
