Definition: The City of Sparks was created in 1904 to replace Wadsworth as the switching yard on this section of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Originally named Harriman after the railroad tycoon, Sparks was rechristened to honor Governor John T. Sparks. The railroad yard is still there, but Sparks has grown into a multi-faceted and family friendly town.
Sparks is just east of Reno and the second largest city in Washoe County.
