Definition: Pyramid Lake is the most well-known use of this word in Nevada, though there was a Pyramid City mining camp north of Reno. Pyramid Lake is a popular recreation destination and completely within the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Reservation. It is a remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan, which covered much of northern Nevada 10 to 15 thousand years ago. Explorer John Fremont named the lake after a prominent, pyramid-shaped rock island near the west shore.
