Definition: Near the beginning, the location of today's Reno was known as Lakes Crossing. The name came from the toll bridge across the Truckee River where the Virginia Street Bridge now spans the stream, operated by one Myron C. Lake. He succeeded in luring the railroad to establish a station near his bridge and is thus credited with being Reno's founder. Lake went on to become a prominent citizen and built a home preserved near downtown as the Lake Mansion. Lake Street is also named after him. Reno's name, by the way, came from Civil War officer Jesse Lee Reno, who was killed in action at South Mountain, PA, in 1862.
