Definition: Numerous features in Nevada bear the Humboldt name, including the Humboldt River, Humboldt County, West Humboldt Range, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, and Humboldt Sink. All of these and more were named after Baron Friedrich Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), a German traveler and naturalist who had the time and money to get around both North and South America. Humboldt wrote about his adventures and was a well known explorer in his time. Another explorer, John Fremont, named the Humboldt River and Humboldt Mountains after him when he traveled the area in 1845-46.
