Definition: The town of Gerlach is 100 miles north of Reno on Nevada Highway 34. It was established in 1909 on the main railroad line, between the Black Rock and Smoke Creek Deserts. If you've heard of Gerlach at all, it's probably in relation to the annual Burning Man festival, held on the Black Rock playa a few miles north of town. Gerlach is the last outpost of civilization for those exploring the Black Rock Desert High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area. It was named for Louis Gerlach and the nearby Gerlach Land and Cattle Company.
