Definition: Austin, Nevada, originated as a mining camp and is now a rural recreation and historic area located near the geographic center of Nevada and on the Loneliest Road in America, U.S. 50. At the height of its mining boom 1863, Austin and the surrounding Reese River Mining District had a population of over 10,000, Austin was the county seat of Lander County until it was moved to Battle Mountain in 1979.
