Haunted Houses & Scary Stuff Around Reno and Sparks
Haunted houses are really popular around Reno during Halloween, and it seems the scarier the better. Some of these haunted houses are well done and can be frightening even for those who think they are ready. Parents are cautioned to use discretion when taking children to these Halloween events.

Frightmare 2012 at Outlets at Legends
Frightmare is located in the parking lot outside of Scheels, 1200 Scheels Drive in Sparks. The haunted house will be open on Thursday through Sunday nights, from October 4 through Halloween on October 31. The scaring begins at 7 p.m. each night. There are four separate frightening experiences - Evil Clown Town, Rikers Island Prison, Black Hole, and Firghtmare Maze. Tickets are $11 for either Evil Clown Town or Rikers Island Prison. It's $16 for all four attractions. Not recommended for kids under 8 years old. Check the website for various options, including group rates.
Reno Fright Fest presents Slaughter House at Meadowood Mall
The Slaughter House opens on October 11. Haunting dates for 2012 are October 11 - 14, 18 - 21, 25 - 31. The Slaughter House is a professional haunted house that is reportedly really scary. You might want to read the Reno Fright Fest Warning before going to this haunted event. The Slaughter House is inside the Meadowood Mall, 5000 Meadowood Mall Circle in south Reno. Use the entrance by the bus stop on the south side of the mall. Hours are 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Sundays 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are only available at the door for $13. If you just can't wait to be scared, a Speed Pass for $20 moves you to the front of the line.
"The Laughter House" is a kid friendly show on Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and on Halloween from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Families and kids are $6 each and there is free candy involved. For more information, call (877) SoScary / (877) 767-2279.
Kingdom of Horrors
Kingdom of Horrors is billed as Reno's scariest haunted house, so be forewarned. The haunting is based on the story of spooky stuff that went on at a Kilburn Estate deep in some swamp (see the website for the story), like people disappearing and having their souls stolen. Kingdom of Horrors is located at 515 E. 7th Street in Reno, next to Roller Kingdom. Starting October 6, Kingdom of Horrors is open on Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., on Fridays and Saturdays from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., on Sundays from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., and on October 30 and 31. Grimes Castle Haunted House in Carson City
Grimes Castle, Carson City's cursed haunted house, unleashes an entire evening of terrifying events in The Dungeon. It will be open on three weekends during October, plus Halloween night. Here are the dates and times for 2012...- October 12 - 13, 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.
- October 19 - 20, 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.
- October 25 - 28, 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.
- October 31, 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.
Carson City Ghost Walk - Legends of the Past
Carson City's rich and intriguing history is explored and theatrically relived during this 20th Annual Ghost Walk. "The Carson City Ghost Walk is a delightfully spooky and enjoyable way to experience Carson City's Victorian Era and diverse past. Meet lingering spirits of the past, including McAvoy Layne as Mark Twain, with many haunted and paranormal stories to take in. Some of our spirits even lead the guided walking tours of the downtown district's historic homes. Tours will visit inside at least five different houses and locals." These 90 - minute guided walking tours are on Saturday, October 20, and depart every hour beginning at 10 a.m. from behind the Firkin & Fox Pub on 3rd and Curry Streets. The last tour starts at 2:30 p.m.

Halloween in Virginia City
Virginia City Halloween Ghost Walking Tours
Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, October 25 - 28, and Wednesday, October 31 - Walking Ghost Tours start at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. each evening, starting at the Silver Queen Hotel. Hear the stories of those that have chosen to never leave the Comstock and see their eternal resting places, including the Washoe Club. Special guest on the tours will be the Northern Nevada Ghost Hunter's Team. Tickets are $30 per person and must be purchased in advance. Before each tour, there will be a meet and greet with Janice Oberding, author of "A Ghost Hunter's Guide to Virginia City." If that isn't enough, an after - hours ghost hunting tour is available starting at 10:30 p.m. Tickets for this late tour are $80 per person and must also be purchased in advance.
