Haunted Houses & Scary Stuff Around Reno and Sparks

Haunted houses are really popular around Reno during Halloween, and it seems the scarier the better. Some of these haunted houses are well done and can be frightening even for those who think they are ready. Parents are cautioned to use discretion when taking children to these Halloween events.

(Note: Some Halloween events are not announced and/or updated until just before Halloween. Check back for possible additions and updates.)

Frightmare 2013 at Victorian Square

Frightmare is located at Victorian Square in Sparks, next to the Century Theaters (1250 Victorian Avenue). The haunted house will be open on Thursday through Sunday nights, from October 3 through Halloween on October 31. The scaring begins at 7 p.m. each night. There are four separate frightening experiences - Evil Clown Town, Zombie Farm House, Black Hole, and Firghtmare Maze. Tickets are $15 for either Evil Clown Town or Zombie Farm House. The Maze and Black Hole are $10 for both. It's $20 for all four attractions. Not recommended for kids under 8 years old. Check the website for various options, including group rates and tickets online.

Reno Fright Fest presents Slaughter House

The Slaughter House, northern Nevada's largest haunted house, opens on Thursday, October 10, 2013. Haunting dates for 2013 are October 11 - 13, 17 - 20, 24 - 27, and October 31 - November 3. The Slaughter House is a professional haunted house that is reportedly really scary. You might want to read the Reno Fright Fest Warning before going to this haunted event. The Slaughter House is now at The Rise Nightclub, 210 N. Sierra Street in downtown Reno (was at the Meadowood Mall). Hours are 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Sundays 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and extra late on Halloween. Tickets are only available at the door for $13. If you just can't wait to be scared, a Speed Pass for $20 moves you to the front of the line. The Speed Pass and group tickets (20 or more) can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling (775) 885-6999.

Kingdom of Horrors

Kingdom of Horrors is billed as Reno's scariest haunted house, so be forewarned. The haunting is based on the story of spooky stuff that went on at a Kilburn Estate deep in some swamp (see the website for the story), like people disappearing and having their souls stolen. Kingdom of Horrors is located at 515 E. 7th Street in Reno, next to Roller Kingdom. Starting Friday, October 11, 2013, Kingdom of Horrors is open on the following dates from 6 p.m. to as long as the crowd lasts - October 11 - 12, 15 - 20, 24 - 27, Halloween, and November 1 - 2. Admission is $12, or $15 for a Skip The Line Pass. Get a $2 discount by bringing an empty RockStar energy drink container. The information phone number is (775) 682-0998.

Grimes Castle Haunted House in Carson City

Grimes Castle, Carson City's cursed haunted house, unleashes an entire evening of terrifying events in The Dungeon. It will be open on three weekends during October, plus Halloween night. Here are the dates and times for 2012...

  • October 19 - 20, 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.
  • October 25 - 28, 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.
  • October 31, 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.

Carson City Classic Ghost Walk

Carson City's rich and intriguing history is explored and theatrically relived during this 21st Annual Ghost Walk. "The Carson City Ghost Walk is a delightfully spooky and enjoyable way to experience Carson City’s Victorian Era and diverse past. Meet lingering spirits of the past, with many haunted and paranormal stories to take in." These 90 - minute guided walking tours are on Saturday, October 19, 2013, and depart every half hour from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. All tours begin behind the Firkin & Fox Pub on 3rd and Curry Streets. The last tour leaves at 2:30 p.m. The cost is $15 per person in advance. Tickets are $20 the day of the event if any are available.

The Mini Ghost Tour is designed just for kids. There will be four tours, starting at 10:15 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and 11:45 a.m. Advance tickets are $5 for kids under 12 and $7 for older participants. On tour day, it will be $7 and $10 respectively. Costumes are welcome and there will be trick or treating on the mini walk. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Halloween in Virginia City

Virginia City Halloween Ghost Walking Tours

Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, October 24 - 27, 2013, and Thursday, October 31, 2013 - Walking Ghost Tours start at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. each evening, starting at the Silver Queen Hotel. Hear the stories of those that have chosen to never leave the Comstock and see their eternal resting places, including the Washoe Club. Special guest on the tours will be the Northern Nevada Ghost Hunter's Team and After World Paranormal. Tickets are $30 per person and must be purchased in advance. An after - hours ghost hunting tour is available starting at 10:30 p.m. Tickets for this late tour are $80 per person and must also be purchased in advance.
