What Are Charter Schools?
The charter school concept is a bit different than regular public schools. Here is the explanation provided by the Washoe County School District (WCSD) - "Charter schools are public schools funded with taxpayer dollars. Charters get the same per-pupil allocation from the state as the school district does. They take a count of students in the same way, and they receive their funding directly from the state based on their official enrollment. They are also eligible for Title 1 funds on the same basis as other schools. In addition, they get a proportionate share of special education dollars if they're serving eligible children."... read moreCharter schools typically offer a different, sometimes specialized curriculum than that found in regular public schools. Instructional methods may also differ, but students still must adhere to district and state standards. Just like standard public schools, charter schools cannot be affiliated with any church and may not set discriminatory standards about who can attend.
