Reno sports teams used to be the UNR Wolf Pack and that was about it. Now, a professional sports team scene is developing, highlighted by the advent of the Reno Aces, our Triple-A baseball team affiliated with the big league Arizona Diamondbacks. Another pro sports team that's landed here is the Reno Bighorns, an NBA Development League team affiliated with the Sacramento Kings and New York Knicks.

The Reno Aces first game in Reno is scheduled for April 17, 2009. The Aces are moving to Reno from Tuscon, Arizona, where the Triple-A team as been for several years as the Sidewinders. The Aces will play in a
brand new stadium being built in downtown Reno by SK Baseball, who bought the team and is responsible for the move to Reno. The Reno Aces are affiliated with the Arizona Diamondback of Major League Baseball and will be in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League.

Reno Bighorns Basketball
The Reno Bighorns are part of the NBA Development League and will be playing in the Western division. The team is affiliated with the Sacramento Kings and Orlando Magic. Most of the 25 home games are scheduled on weekends, and will be played at the downtown Reno Events Center. Season ticket information is available by calling (775) 284-2622 or on the Bighorns website. Tickets for individual games are as low as $10.

The Reno Astros season is from May through September. The independent semi-pro team plays all of its regular games in at Moana Stadium in Reno, just west of S. Virginia Street on Moana Lane. UNR Wolf Pack Sports
Football usually gets the most attention, but the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) sports program turns out a number of quality teams for local fans to enjoy. Sometimes they do quite well and even garner national attention. In 2004, the Wolf Pack men's basketball team made it to the NCAA tournament "Sweet Sixteen" before being eliminated. Wolf Pack athletes have competed in the Olympics, and include two medal winners. The Wolf Pack is a member of the Western Athletic Conference.

Reno-Tahoe Open
The Reno-Tahoe Open is the only PGA Tour professional golf event played in northern Nevada. The course is Montreux Golf and Country Club in south Reno and the event is held in August. There are quite a few related events going on in conjuction with the golf tournament. Check the website for details.

American Century Celebrity Golf Championship
As the name implies, the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship attracts a number of players whose names are well known. Celebrities who have played the tournament include Michael Jordan, Kevin Nealon, Charles Barkley, Ben Roethlisberger, Stone Phillips, Jack Wagner, Jerry Rice, Tony Romo, Billy Joe Tolliver, Rick Rhoden, and Darryl Strawberry. The American Century Celebrity Golf Championship is played at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, on the shores of Lake Tahoe. The tournament supports the Lance Armstrong Foundation and its Livestrong Global Cancer Initiative.
