Wild horses are a symbol of Nevada and the American West. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is the agency responsible for managing wild horses on public lands. BLM is also mandated to care for and dispose of excess wild horses and burros according to rules and regulations in the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971. As wild horse numbers continue to increase, both on the range and in holding facilities, BLM, horse advocacy groups, and the public interested in wild horses are struggling to come up with ways to deal with the situation.
