Don't even think about doing your own fireworks show. Not only will you be putting yourself and your neighbors at risk of fire and/or serious injury, you are quite likely to be arrested and fined. Attend one of the area's spectacular fireworks shows and have a safe and sane Fourth of July celebration.

Fireworks are Illegal in Reno and Washoe County

No fireworks are legal except approved public fireworks displays, period. According to the Reno Fire Department, "Even though it may be legal to purchase fireworks in some locations outside of Washoe County, it is illegal to possess or use fireworks and/or pyrotechnics within the city of Reno and in the unincorporated areas of Washoe County. Illegal possession or use of fireworks can result in fines up to $1,000 and/or up to six months in jail for each offense, and the laws also provide for seizure and forfeiture of all such materials from individuals by law enforcement." If you do it anyway and your pyrotechnic activities cause property damage or bodily injury, you could be wiped out financially for life. For more information, contact the Reno Fire Department's Division of Fire Prevention at (775) 334-2300.

If you happen to have some fireworks and would like to get rid of them in a safe and sane manner, the Reno Fire Department has an amnesty program whereby you can turn them in to a fire station, police officer, or sheriff's deputy, no questions asked.

Fireworks Illegal in Other Places As Well

Fireworks are illegal on public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management and in national forests managed by the U.S. Forest Service.. Around Lake Tahoe, no fireworks are permitted in Placer and El Dorado Counties in California, and Douglas and Carson City Counties in Nevada. The only exception to all of this is at Pyramid Lake.

Legal Fireworks at Pyramid Lake

If you simply must do your own fireworks, the only legal place in Washoe County to buy and shoot off fireworks is the sovereign nation of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Reservation north of the Reno / Sparks area. Get the details from Fourth of July at Pyramid Lake.
