Earth Day in Reno
April 19 - Idlewild Park is the setting for Reno's 20th Annual Earth Day on Sunday, April 19. The day will feature music on a biofuels-powered stage, sustainability workshops, children's activities, a sustainable farmers' market, free recycling for stuff like cell phones and CFL bulbs, and booths with earth-friendly food, goods, and services.Earth Day is organized by Nevada EcoNet. Activities will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is free. Free parking and a free shuttle service to Idlewild Park will be available at nearby Reno High School, 395 Booth Street. North Lake Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival
April 18 - The North Lake Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival will be at the Village at Squaw Valley USA, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This free, carbon-neutral and zero-waste event will feature a Push, Pull or Pedal Eco Parade, games and activities for kids, all-day entertainment featuring the EarthCapades Environmental Vaudeville, live music throughout the day by Neva, Truckee Tribe, Downbeat, and Jeff Jones, and the Trashion Show presented by Haute Trash and the Truckee High School Envirolution Club. The largest environmental event in the region, The Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival provides an opportunity to learn about recycling, composting, alternative energy, sustainability, watershed and forest health, and reducing our carbon footprint. On April 17, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., the Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival will be playing at the Olympic Village Lodge in Squaw Valley. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Advance tickets are on sale at New Moon in Tahoe City and Truckee, Alices Market in Squaw Valley, and Mad About Music in Kings Beach.
Earth Day at UNR - "Turning Earth Day Theory Into Everyday Action"
April 20 - Environmental Film Festival at 5 p.m., in the Joe Crowley Student Union on the UNR campus.April 21 - Free one-hour workshops on sustainable practices will be offered 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A community-university mixer with refreshments will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the Trashion Show at 7 p.m., a fashion show featuring items made from repurposed materials. Some local media personalities, as well as some preschoolers from the University's Child and Family Research Center, will join University students on the runway. There will also be a raffle and dessert. Admission to the Trashion Show is $2 for students and $5 for the general public. Proceeds will benefit student sustainability projects, such as composting efforts and the student farm.
These events are a cooperative effort of UNR's Academy for the Environment, the Environmental Action Team (EnAcT), and the Joe Crowley Student Union (CSU).
