Cinco de Mayo is our annual celebration of Mexican American and south-of-the-border Mexican culture. It is not Mexican Independence Day, but a festival commemorating the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. As celebrated today, Cinco de Mayo is mostly a north-of-the-border fiesta, with not much happening down south except in the Mexican state of Puebla. Nevada Hispanic Services puts on the biggest Cinco de Mayo festival in the area, a two-day party at Victorian Square in Sparks.
