Reno Movie Theaters
Multiple Choices for Reno / Tahoe Movie Lovers

By Standley White, About.com

Reno movie theaters are busy with local residents who love their movies. The metro area supports four multi-screen theaters, a cinema at the Grand Sierra Resort, film features at the Fleischmann Planetarium, and, get this, a real-live functioning drive-in. We also have the Reno Film Festival for those who just can't get enough.

This movie house resides in Reno's Summit Sierra shopping center on the southern fringes of the metro area. Tickets are a little more expensive than the other theaters closer in, but you get a poshier setting.

Century Park Lane 16

The Park Lane is similar to the other Century theaters around town, which is to say it's nice. The immediate vicinity is in the midst of redevelopment and a little scruffy right now.

Century Riverside 12

The Riverside 12 is in downtown Reno by the Truckee River, in the Riverwalk District of shops, restaurants, coffee houses, and art galleries. Going to the movies here can be part of a day spent enjoying Reno's urban environment.

Century Sparks 14

Victorian Square is the setting for Century Sparks 14 theater. There is good parking and several big events during the year to keep the place hopping. The area is getting some serious redevelopment action, so it will be really nice before too long.

Grand Sierra Cinema

Cheap seats; second-run, but first-rate, movies inside the Grand Sierra Resort & Casino. The theater has two-person love seats instead of the usual rows. It's a nice change of pace and way less money (unless you patronize the casino).

Fleischmann Planetarium & Science Center

The planetarium is on the University of Nevada, Reno campus facing N. Virginia Street. The complex has a museum with changing hands-on displays and a gift shop. There is the usual fare of outstanding star shows, but the movies are awesome. Both shows and movies change regularly. I saw Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon and it blew me away.

West Wind El Rancho Drive-In 4

You can go to the drive-in around here, a rare treat indeed. I think maybe that the El Rancho has survived has something to do with Hot August Nights. This is a fair weather sport, however, so don't be disappointed if you can't watch movies under the stars in December.

Reno Film Festival

The actual festival is in May, but there a number of things going on before the main event. Check out the Reno Film Festival website for times and places. Venues include the Grand Sierra Resort, National Automobile Museum, Nevada Museum of Art, Truckee Meadows Community College, and Silver Legacy Resort.
