Chinese (also referred to as Asian) New Year is the Asian custom of bringing in what is also called the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival. 2012 is the Year of the Dragon and it officially begins on January 23.
Chinese New Year Celebration at the Atlantis
The Chinese Association of Northern Nevada is organizing this Chinese New Year party in the Paradise Ballroom at the Atlantis Hotel Casino. The festivities on Saturday, January 28, start at 5 p.m. and go until 9 p.m. Tickets are $9 for adults and youth, $5 for children. A traditional nine course Chinese dinner will be served. There will be a raffle for electronic gizmos like a Kindle Fire and gift cards for major retailers. There will be dance and singing performances and a traditional Lion Dance. Chinese New Year Celebration at Mt. Rose
The Mt. Rose ski area will celebrate Chinese New Year on Saturday, January 28 with discounts on Asian food and drinks and a skiing dragon descending the mountain. Activities will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mt. Rose skiing is up the Mt. Rose Highway, less than half an hour from Reno. For more information, call (775) 849-0704.
Chinese New Year Concert at the Reno Ballroom
Brought to you by the Silver Legacy, actors and singers Rosanne Lui and Lei Tse will be the featured performers at this Chinese New Year concert in the Reno Ballroom. Chinese New Year Concert at the Peppermill
Our Chinese Heart - Eternal Melody will be performing at Peppermill's Tuscany Events Center on Saturday, January 28, at 8 p.m. This is a variety show featuring singers, musicians, and comedians. Chinese New Year at the Eldorado
The Buffet at the Eldorado will be serving special Asian dishes form January 23 to 28, starting at 1 p.m. Each meal purchased will come with free Li Shee (lucky money). Lion dances will snake through the Eldorado on January 27-29 and February 3-5.
Lantern Festival at the Grand Sierra Resort
To bring in the Year of the Dragon, the Grand Sierra Resort's Lantern Festival is offering a weekend of Chinese-themed entertainment, food, and cultural performances from February 3 through 5. The Magic of Chin-Chin show will be in the Grand Theatre on Friday, February 3. There will be a Lion Dance Dance Off on Saturday. Check the schedule for other entertainment, plus food, gaming, and room specials. The Grand Sierra is at 2500 E. 2nd Street in Reno.
Asian New Year Celebration in Carson City
Come enjoy the 10th Annual Asian New Year Celebration at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City. The Year of the Dragon will be brought in on Saturday, January 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Little Swan Dancers will perform at 1 p.m. Everyone can join the lion dance. Other activities will include Chinese jump rope, origami, and learning how to use chop sticks. The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada is at 813 N. Carson Street, Carson City.
