Chinese New Year Events and Celebrations in the Reno / Tahoe Area

Enjoy these events and celebrations bringing in the Chinese New Year around the Reno / Tahoe region. Chinese (also referred to as Asian) New Year is the Asian custom of bringing in what is also called the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival. 2013 is the Year of the Snake and it officially begins on February 10.

Chinese New Year at the Eldorado Hotel Casino

To celebrate Chinese New Year, The Buffet at the Eldorado Hotel Casino will be serving authentic Chinese dishes from February 10 through 17. Each meal purchased will come with free Li Shee (lucky money). The Chinese Lion Dance has been part of Chinese culture for over a thousand years and a part of the New Year festivities. From February 16 through 18, the White Crane Lion Dancers will begin on the Eldorado mezzanine and wind their way through the casino for all to see. Saturday performances will begin at 5 p.m., 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Sunday dances will be at 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. On Monday, the dancers perform at 1 p.m. The Eldorado is in downtown Reno at 345 North Virginia Street.

Chinese New Year Celebration at Mt. Rose

Celebrate the Year of the Snake at Mt. Rose ski area with a little "snaking" down the slopes of your own. Enjoy the of the Chinese New Year with numerous activities, food and drink specials, and a Lion Show behind the Base Lodge. The fun begins at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 16. Mt. Rose ski area is up the Mt. Rose Highway, less than half an hour from Reno. For more information, call (775) 849-0704.

Chinese Concert at the Reno Ballroom

Brought to you by the Silver Legacy, entertainers Tavia Yeung Yi, Ron Ng and Sean Lin will be the featured performers at this Chinese concert in the Reno Ballroom. The show starts at 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 17. Tickets are $88 and available online. The Reno Ballroom is at 401 N. Center Street in downtown Reno. For more information, call (775) 329-4777.

Chinese Spring Festival Celebration at UNR

The Chinese Association of Northern Nevada is organizing this Chinese New Year event at University of Nevada, Reno Joe Crowley Student Union. The festivities on Sunday, February 24, start at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children under 10, and free for children under 3. Included are a lunch, raffle prizes, and dancing and singing performances. To purchase tickets and for more information, call (775) 410-0604. Also sponsoring the event is the Chinese Students and Scholars' Association at UNR.

Chinese New Year Celebration at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City

On Saturday, February 23, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City will be celebrating Chinese New Year. Come enjoy fun cultural crafts and activities for the Year of the Snake. The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada is at 813 N. Carson Street, Carson City. Admission is $3 for children (2 - 13), $5 for adults, free for kids under 2. Once inside, all activities are free. For information, call (775) 884-2226.
