Winter break for the Washoe County School District is December 23, 2013 to January 10, 2014. Winter break camps are a great way to keep the kids occupied during the winter holiday season. The cities of Reno and Sparks offer camps with a variety of activities for grade school children and young teens. 2013 - 2014 Winter Break Camps and Activities in Reno
Vacation Station and Holiday Adventures - Vacation Station and Holiday Adventures operate during some school track breaks, summer vacation, and the winter and spring holidays. Kids ages 6 to 14 can participate in sports, swimming, arts and crafts, movies, and more. Hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The cost at these locations is $100 per week or $30 per day for drop-ins. It is $80 for weeks with only 4 days (no programs on December 25, 2013 and January 1, 2014).

At Neil Road Recreation Center (3925 Neil Road), the fee is $60 per week or $30 per day for drop-ins. For 4 day weeks, it is $48.
Holiday Art Camps from VSA Nevada - VSA Nevada is holding several one-day Holiday Art Camps at its Lake Mansion location, 250 Court Street in Reno. The camps are for kids ages 6 to 10 years and the cost is $20 per day. Times are 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The dates are December 23, 26, 27, and 30, 2013, and January 2 and 3, 2014. There will be two week long sessions of Winter Art Camp from January 6 through 10, 2014. Choose from morning (9 a.m. to 12 noon) or afternoon (1 p.m. to 4 p.m.). Winter Break Clay Camp at the Nevada Museum of Art - Kids ages 7 to 12 will have fun exploring the tactile nature of clay. Instruction will encompass basic hand building, throwing on the wheel, and sculpture. In this 5 day camp, students will learn about the basics of pottery, glazing and the transformation of their pieces from the heat of kiln. The camp is 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon, January 6 to 10, 2014. E.L. Cord Museum School of the Nevada Museum of Art - The E.L. Cord Museum School has several classes through the holiday season for toddlers through adults. Offerings include Pen & Ink Holiday Cards, Mosaics: Handmade Gifts, Holiday Ornaments, and Gingerbread Workshops. Refer to the Museum School Class Schedule for class details and online sign-ups. Winter Camp Discovery at The Discovery - The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum is presenting two Winter Camp Discovery sessions for kids from 1st through 7th grades, with different themes for different grade groups. The first camp is for two days - January 2 and 3, 2014. The second is for a week, from January 6 to 10, 2014. Costs vary, so visit the website for details and to register online. Great Basin Naturalists Winter Break Camp - Great Basin Naturalists will be hosting a week long outdoor skills camp for ages 8 to 12 at Galena Creek Visitor Center. The camp will run from January 6 through 10, 2014. It begins each day at 10 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m., with early drop-off starting at 8 a.m. and late pick-up ending at 5:30 p.m. Each day there will be a new environmental exploration theme with activities, games, crafts, and guest speakers. Topics will include snow-shelter building, snowshoe hikes, GPS and orienteering courses, campfire building and cooking, snow surveys, astronomy, avalanche safety. In the case of inclement weather or poor road conditions, the camp will be relocated to Bartley Ranch Regional Park for the day. Schools Out Skate at Roller Kingdom - Winter break roller skating sessions will be offered at Roller Kingdom from December 23 to 31, 2013 (except Christmas Day) and from January 1 to 10, 2014. The sessions will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and cost $4.75, which includes skates. Roller Kingdom is at 515 E. 7th Street in Reno. For more information, call (775) 329-3472.
Winter Break Camp by KidScape Productions - This camp will take young actors (ages 7 to 17) through a fast-paced and fun-filled week. Actors will learn professional theater skills, including all the steps in the audition process, makeup application, character development and what goes on in theater behind the scenes. Kidscape Productions is a professional life skills and acting program for kids. Students will be preparing "Ten Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse." Sessions will be at Damonte Ranch High School (10500 Rio Wrangler Parkway in south Reno) and are every day, January 6 through 10, 2014, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuition is $295 plus a $25 materials cost.
Winter Break Camps and Activities in Sparks
Christmas Capers from the City of Sparks - The winter break program offered by the City of Sparks is named Christmas Capers. The program is for children in kindergarten through 6th grade. There will be four sessions, each going daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. All will be at the Sparks Recreation Gym, 98 Richards Way. The program offers field trips, sports, games, crafts and more.
