Driving times and distances from Reno to cities in California vary greatly. The most visited California destinations aren't far from Reno, but it is a long way and takes hours of driving time to access the far reaches of California. You must also factor in traffic, road construction and the weather when making a driving trip to the Golden State.

Main Highways from Reno to California

Interstate 80 (I80) is the main and most direct route from Reno and over the Sierra Nevada mountains to the towns and metro areas of central California. However, due to periodic construction and severe winter weather, it may not be the best choice at times. It's always a prudent idea to check highway conditions and the weather forecast before heading west on I80. Downtown Reno is the starting point for these times and distances. Miles and kilometers are rounded off.

U.S. 50 from Carson City takes travelers around the south end of Lake Tahoe and over the Sierra to Sacramento, where it ends at a merge with I80.

U.S. 395 enters California just north of Reno and continues on through Oregon. Going south, 395 goes to through Carson City and enters California at Topaz Lake. The highway goes all the way down the east side of the Sierra to southern California.
