National Winter Trails Day, on Saturday, January 12, 2013, is a great opportunity to learn more about safe and fun family recreation in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Locally, the day's events are being headed up by the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) with numerous free and family-friendly activities from which to choose.

The closest place to enjoy the day is Tahoe Meadows, on the Mt. Rose Highway between Incline Village and the Mt. Rose ski area. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., come enjoy snow oriented activities which will include snow safety demonstrations, guided snowshoe hikes, winter camping demonstration, snowman making, avalanche beacon scavenger hunts, winter gear demos, winter safety advice, and free hot chocolate and snacks. Cross-country ski areas at Kirkwood and Tahoe Donner will also be holding free events. Get more information from my National Winter Trails Day article.
