January is National Radon Action Month. Because we live where radon occurs, residents of the Reno / Tahoe region should learn about this issue. Radon, a naturally occuring radioactive gas that comes from decaying uranium, is the leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Radon Education Program encourages Reno / Tahoe area residents to test their homes for this potentially lethal hazard.
Since it is odorless, colorless, and tasteless, you must test to find out if radon is lurking in your home. Should your home prove to have elevated radon levels, there are a variety of mitigation measures you can take to eliminate the hazard. Getting rid of radon isn't free, but it's a bargain compared to lung cancer.
Together with Washoe County Library, the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) is offering free educational programs and radon test kits during January at the UNCE office and several library branches. Here are the dates, times, and places for these programs...
- Thursday, January 3 - 6 p.m., Washoe County UNCE office, 4955 Energy Way, Reno.
- Thursday, January 10 - 6:30 p.m., Incline Village Library, 845 Alder Avenue, Incline Village.
- Saturday, January 26 - 12 noon, North Valleys Library, 1075 N. Hills Boulevard #340, Reno.
- Wednesday, January 30 - 6 p.m., South Valleys Library, 15650A Wedge Parkway, Reno.
