Go get your own Christmas tree

This holiday season, there are three areas of public lands where you can go out and get your own Christmas tree.

Lake Tahoe Basin - The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will be offering 3,000 tree cutting permits starting on Friday, November 23. Permits are $10 each (cash or check only) and limited to two per family. Species you can cut are pine, fir, or cedar. Permits will be sold at the Incline Village Forest Service office and at the LTBMU Forest Supervisor's office in South Lake Tahoe.

Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest - The Carson Ranger District is selling permits through December 24. Permits are $10 and sold on a first-come basis until they run out. Trees available for cutting include white fir, incense cedar, Jeffrey pine and lodgepole pine. Cutting areas are Dog Valley, Mount Rose, Markleeville, Woodfords, Hope Valley, and Wolf Creek. Permits are available at Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest headquarters, 1200 Franklin Way in Sparks, and several other locations.

Bureau of Land Management (BLM) - The BLM Carson City District is selling Christmas tree cutting permits for $5. They are good for some fairly remote areas; Pinenut Mountains, Clan Alpine Mountains, Desatoya Mountains, and the Excelsior Mountains. You can get maps and directions with the permit. Permits are available at the BLM Carson City District Office, BLM Nevada State Office in Reno, and other locations. For more information, call (775) 885-6161.
