We already knew that some of our Lake Tahoe area ski resorts were among the best in North America, but it's nice when that fact is acknowledged by a popular publication.

In a recent article in Outside Magazine, Squaw Valley was selected as #1 among the top 40 ski resorts in a survey that spanned the continent from California to Maine in the U.S. and from British Columbia to Quebec in Canada. Squaw Valley wasn't the only Lake Tahoe and Sierra Nevada resort in the top 40. Here are the others...
- #5 - Mammoth Mountain
- #13 - Heavenly
- #25 - Sugar Bowl
- #27 - Kirkwood
- #34 - Sierra-at-Tahoe
- #37 - Alpine Meadows
The criteria used for selection leaned heavily on amenities as a destination resort. That left out local favorite Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, which has no overnight accommodation and doesn't really need them since it's so close to Reno.
Opening dates can be iffy (if there is enough snow, if it is cold enough, etc.). Here is what the resorts are telling us at this point... Update: Some resorts, including Squaw Valley, have moved up their opening dates. The new dates are included in this list.
