OK, you probably won't get to actually ride with Shaun White, but you can try your board tricks in a halfpipe he helped design. The 22 foot high, 500 foot long halfpipe will be used by the red headed "Flying Tomato" for training purposes, but it is now open to the public as well.

The new halfpipe is at Northstar California (formerly known as Northstar-at-Tahoe) near Truckee. White and Vail Resorts, owner of Northstar and several other ski areas, recently announced that Northstar will be his home mountain and primary training resort. As part of the deal, the two-time Olympic gold medalist will be involved with representing Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone in Colorado, and Heavenly and Northstar in California/Nevada.

Northstar is only one of several top downhill ski resorts around Lake Tahoe. The closest to Reno is Mt. Rose, with the others being a bit further away. Despite a dearth of natural snow at the start of this year's ski season, the big resorts are open with lots of man-made snow. Hopefully, Mother Nature will have made some additions to the slopes by the time you read this.
