Things are moving quickly with the Washoe Drive Fire, particularly the flames themselves. By around 6 p.m., the fire had spread to over 3,000 acres and is at zero percent containment. The evacuation area was widened and now includes much of the area between Little Washoe Lake and the Mt. Rose Highway. For evacuation information inside the 775 area code call 211. Outside the area, call (775) 337-5800. U.S. 395 remains closed in both directions.
Numerous structures are reported to have been burned to the ground, homes among them. Officials won't be able to begin assessing the damage and extent of the fire until the daylight hours on Friday. Meanwhile, Governor Sandoval declared a state of emergency this afternoon and Nevada has been approved by FEMA for a Fire Management Assistance Grant, which will help cover 75% of the costs associated with the fire.
