Reno / Tahoe weekend - Olympic Heritage Celebration, Elvis' Birthday, and more

There may not be much snow, but there are plenty of things to do this winter weekend and on into the second week of January, 2012.

Come in From the Cold - The first performance of this annual family entertainment series will be on Saturday, January 7 at Bartley Ranch Park. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Seating is limited to 280, so get there early if you really want to get in.

Olympic Heritage Celebration Week - This annual event celebrates the history and heritage of the 1960 Winter Olympic Games held at Squaw Valley. The 2012 event will be held at Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park on the southwest shore of Lake Tahoe. There will be activities for everyone starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 7, and continuing through Sunday, January 15. Most events are free, but there is an $8 parking fee at the park. Elvis to the Max - Celebrate Elvis' birthday in downtown Reno on January 6 - 8, and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada will benefit. The King would have been 77 on Monday, The Silver Legacy, Eldorado, and Circus Circus are supporting the Food Bank in conjunction with this series of elvis events.

National Winter Trails Day - National Winter Trails Day is Saturday, January 7. This is a great opportunity to learn more about safe and fun family recreation in the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains. Locally, the day's events are being headed up by the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) and Lake Tahoe ski resorts, with numerous free and family-friendly activities from which to choose.

NBA D-League Showcase - Here's a chance to see lots of pro basketball action for not much money. The NBA Development League Showcase includes all 16 NBA D-League teams, each playing two games over the course of four days, from Monday through Thursday, January 9 to 12 The event will be at the Reno Events Center, home of our D-League Reno Bighorns.
