National Winter Trails Day, on Saturday, January 7, is a great opportunity to learn more about safe and fun family recreation in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Locally, the day's events are being headed up by the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) with numerous free and family-friendly activities from which to choose.

The closest place to enjoy the day is Tahoe Meadows, on the Mt. Rose Highway between Incline Village and the Mt. Rose ski area. Starting at 10 a.m., TRTA will be hosting snow oriented activities which will include guided snowshoe hikes, snowshelter building, gear demonstrations, and hot drinks and tasty goodies. There will be another TRTA event at Van Sickle State Park near the city of South Lake Tahoe. Cross-country ski areas at Kirkwood, Royal Gorge, and Tahoe City will also be holding free events.
