Since most of us are taxed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on an annual basis, we seldom think about getting money back from the IRS, except in the form of tax refunds. They are actually pretty good about sending refund checks to those who have one coming, but they can't get it to you if they can't find you. That is exactly the issue with $153.3 million in refunds the IRS can't deliver because of bad mailing addresses.
The share of the pot for Nevadans is $2.7 million. The average due per lost taxpayer is $1,547, a tidy sum that just about anyone could use these days. In Washoe County, there are 167 checks waiting worth a total of $192,472. We have neighbors in Douglas County and Carson City also due refunds.
If you think the IRS may not have your correct address and you are due a refund, go to "Where's My Refund?" on the IRS website and do a search. You can also call (800) 829-1954. Another place to check is a list of 263 Nevadans compiled by the Reno Gazette-Journal (does not include Clark County).
Scam reminder - The IRS does not contact anyone by email to inform them that a refund is due. Any such emails purporting to be from the IRS are phishing expeditions and should be deleted.
