Happy Thanksgiving!

It has been a tough year so far here in Reno and northern Nevada. In addition to an economy that continues scraping bottom, a series of tragic incidents have plagued us over the past few months, the latest of which was the Caughlin Fire in southwest Reno just last weekend. Through all of this, it's been inspiring to see the people around here step up and do whatever it takes to help their neighbors when it's needed the most. And even when a tragedy isn't involved, lots of people still come out and support the less fortunate in our community, just because it's the right thing to do.

When I was a kid, Christmas was my favorite holiday for the obvious reason that I got new stuff. Having learned to be thankful in a realm beyond mere physical possessions, my favorite is now Thanksgiving. An intact family and good friends are more important than how much stuff you have, as are decent health and a reasonably safe place to live.

A government that still functions in a democratic manner, despite bouts of corruption, stupidity, incompetence, and arrogance, is worth more than any amount of stuff. Not everyone lives in a place where a change in leadership is accompanied by renewed hope among the people rather than soldiers, guns, and more despair. Just living in the United States is worth more than any amount of stuff.

When I look around right here in Reno, it's pretty hard not to be thankful for having a roof over my head, enough to eat, and a warm place to sleep. I wish the same for all of you and hope you enjoy a happy Thanksgiving Day.

If you come up short on a critical ingredient for Thanksgiving dinner, you'll be able to fix the problem at any of several food stores that will be open on Thanksgiving Day. Check out my list of open stores to see where you can go.
