Firefighters got a handle on the devastating Caughlin Fire late yesterday (Friday, Nov. 18), ending the immediate danger to homes and other structures in southwest Reno. About 9500 people evacuated as the blaze roared through several neighborhoods. They are beginning to return to their homes today, except for those who have no home left - several homes were completely destroyed. Firefighters are expected to be mopping up through the weekend and curious residents are asked by authorities to stay out of the burned area for the time being. At approximately 2000 acres, the Caughlin Fire is among the worst in Reno history as far as property damage goes.

Individuals and businesses in northern Nevada have stepped up to help Caughlin Fire victims. Some businesses are donating a percentage of proceeds from their sales and others are accepting donations of food, clothing and other needed items from the public. If you'd like to help, check this list of donation locations provided by KTVN2. Get more donation and fund-raising information from the Northern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross.
