For family fun and a trip to the not-so-distant past, it's hard to beat a ride on one of the many excursion railroads running in Nevada and nearby northern California. Most of these railroads give their engines a rest during the winter months, but some of them roll special trains during the holiday season.
The Polar Express™ on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad will be taking passengers on a holiday excursion on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Trips to the pole start on Friday, November 25, and continue on the weekends through Sunday, December 18. The one hour ride leaves from the V & T Eastgate Depot on Highway 50 (4650 Eastgate Siding Road). I'm thinking this is going to be a popular activity since the first couple of trips are already sold out. I recommend getting advance tickets to avoid being left at the station.
This officially licensed Polar Express™ experience is based on the movie of the same name. Included are hot chocolate and cookies, a keepsake silver bell, entertainment by characters from the movie, a visit from Santa Claus, and a reading of the book by Chris Van Allsburg. Children are encouraged to wear pajamas, just like in the movie.
