The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will start selling Christmas tree cutting permits to the public on November 7, 2011. Permits are $10 each (cash or check, no credit cards) with a limit of two per family. They are valid up and including December 25. Permits will be available at two Lake Tahoe locations and the last day to buy them will be December 16. Included are maps to designated cutting areas and other information about choosing a tree. You'll be able to choose from tree species including pine, cedar, and fir.

North Shore Lake Tahoe - Incline Village Forest Service office, 855 Alder Ave., Incline Village, NV. Permit sales start on Wednesday, November 9. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday through Friday. For more information, call (775) 831-0914. During winter weather, check highway conditions to make sure the Mt. Rose Highway from Reno is open.
South Shore Lake Tahoe - LTBMU Forest Supervisor's office, 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, CA. Permit sales start on Monday, November 7. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, call (530) 543-2694.
Christmas tree cutting permits are also available for other public lands administered by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
