We just had our first decent snowfall. It wasn't really enough to ski on, but our ski areas are moving ahead with preparations for the upcoming winter season. It's suddenly gotten cold enough at night for them to be making snow in anticipation of more of the real thing, which is sure to come.

Boreal, the ski area that consistently opens first, made it again this year on October 28. It's all on man-made snow right now and only a few runs and lifts are operating while waiting for a real snow storm to cover the mountain.

If you are interested in season passes, there are still some deals out there. These things vary from resort to resort, so get online and check around to see if anything of interest is still available. Here are tentative opening dates just announced by resorts around the Reno / Tahoe region. These are all dependent on conditions, of course, so be sure to check the websites before heading to the mountains.

  • Alpine Meadows - December 10
  • Boreal - now open
  • Diamond Peak - December 16
  • Donner Ski Ranch - around Thanksgiving
  • Granlibakken - early December
  • Heavenly - Nov. 18
  • Homewood - Dec. 18
  • Kirkwood - mid-November
  • Mt. Rose - Nov. 23
  • Northstar California - November 18
  • Squaw Valley - Nov. 23
  • Sierra-at-Tahoe - Nov. 24
  • Sugar Bowl - Thanksgiving weekend

Get a Ski Job - Some resorts are still hiring for the season and/or will be holding job fairs. Check the individual websites for information about these employment opportunities.
