Unless you've been holed up somewhere, you know that our mild fall weather is inevitably moving toward winter. We'll be having our first few nights of below freezing temperatures down here in the Truckee Meadows and it's not going to be warm during the day, either. At least the sun is still shining for the most part, but that will change and it could be literally overnight. People who have lived around Reno long enough know how it works - sunny today, snowing tomorrow.
If you want to enjoy some fall color, do it now. I took a trip over the Sierra last weekend and there were still some beautiful stands of aspens to be seen on the east side of Lake Tahoe, along Highway 50, and south of the lake around Hope Valley and along Highway 88. However, this crisp weather is going to quickly strip the remaining leaves from the trees.
Meanwhile, take care of those frost-sensitive plants and other winter preparation chores around the house. If you need some advice about helping your yard survive the winter, check with one of the excellent nurseries and garden centers around the Reno area.

Those Highway numbers could be the varying temperatures we had one day and then the next lol, but no freeze yet that I know of down here in the coastal lowlands.
