Sparks city officials have canceled Street Vibrations events that were to be held in Victorian Square through the weekend of September 24 - 25. The shutdown comes after a gunfight between two rival gangs (reportedly the Hells Angels and Vagos) inside John Ascuaga's Nugget on Friday night, September 23, followed by a drive-by shooting in Victorian Square Saturday morning. The Nugget fight resulted in three people being shot, one fatally. A state of emergency has been declared by the City of Sparks
Renown Medical Center, the hospital where the injured were taken, was locked down after some Vagos members showed up at the facility.
From what I can determine, Street Vibrations is to continue in Reno with increased police presence and other security measures. For continuing coverage and updates, check the Reno Gazette-Journal and KTVN 2 News.
The Reno area sure didn't need this just after the tragedy at the Reno Air Races and the IHOP shooting in Carson City. I hope officials and citizens in Reno and Sparks don't just eliminate a popular event without exploring ways to keep criminals and troublemakers under control. When people like that get to decide what law-abiding locals and visitors do, they've won. We shouldn't tolerate it.
