#About - This August weekend will feature a variety of activities, along with beautiful weather to help you enjoy them.

Nevada Humane Society Duck Race & Festival - This fund-raiser for the Nevada Humane Society will be on Sunday, August 28, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wingfield Park in Reno. There will be music, entertainment, and refreshments, but the main event is the Duck Race down the Truckee River. Buy a yellow rubber duckie for $5 and watch around 20,000 of them race down the river. There will be lots of prizes for the fastest ducks. For more information, call (775) 856-2000 x324.

La Tomatina en Reno - The Club Cal Neva, in association with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, will produce La Tomatina en Reno 2011, the third year of the nation's biggest tomato fight, to take place at 10 North Virginia Street (City Plaza) on Saturday, August 27, at 5:00 p.m. Tickets to participate in the fight are $10 and you must be at least 14 years old. You'll also need to sign a waiver.

Sierra Summer Festival - The Sierra Summer Festival will be at the Reno Livestock Events Center, 1350 N. Wells Ave. in Reno. The Festival will run from Friday, August 26 through Sunday, August 28. Advance tickets are $10 adults, $5 kids 12 and under. Get tickets at local Scolari's markets or from Ticketmaster. There will be live music, monster truck competitions, demolition derbies, carnival rides, roller derby, freestyle motocross, and food vendors. Gates open at 4 p.m. on Friday and at noon on Saturday and Sunday.

Early Voting Starts - Early voting for the 2011 Special Congressional Election starts on Saturday, August 27 and runs through Friday, September 9. Registered voters can cast their ballots at any of several early voting locations around Washoe County.

Bark at the Water Park - Dogs get their annual water play day at the Melio Gaspari Water Play Park in Spanish Springs, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 28. Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space hosts Bark at the Water Park on the last day the water park is open for the season. Friendly, social dogs, on leash and with current vaccinations, are invited to enjoy a day of splashing around among the park's many cool water features. The cost is $3 per person. Dogs are free, but the limit is two pooches per human. Melio Gaspari Water Play Park is at Lazy 5 Regional Park, 7100 Pyramid Way, Spanish Springs.

Nevada Museum of Art - There is always something of interest at the Nevada Museum of Art. There are several cool exhibits and other events in August, including the amazing To Live Forever - Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum of Art through Sept. 4.

Labor Day Holiday Weekend in Reno - Labor Day in Reno, the last big holiday weekend of the summer, falls on Monday, September 5 in 2011. There are plenty of things to do for your last summer fling, and then begins the long slide into fall and winter.

Burning Man - Burning Man 2011, with the art theme of Rites of Passage, is from August 29 through September 5. For the first time in Burning Man history, tickets are sold out. No tickets will be sold at Black Rock City, so don't even think about going out there without one. For all of you who will be there, have a good burn!

Truckee River Rules to Play By - The Truckee River in Reno becomes a magnet for a wide variety of recreational activities during the warm months of the year. With so many people coming to the Truckee River to pursue their own brand of recreation fun, it's important for everyone to share our beautiful river by being polite and considerate of other users. Here are some rules to play by that will help make a day at the Truckee River a pleasant experience for everyone.
