Beware the cone zone - it's Reno road construction season

That old saying about having only two seasons - winter and road construction - fits Reno quite well. As we are coming out of an unusually long and cold winter, highway projects are gearing up at a fast clip. The biggest highway headache right here in the Truckee Meadows is the widening of U.S. 395 south of the I80 intersection (the Spaghetti Bowl), but it's far from the only driving hazard you'll encounter. The other significantly large project is the continuing work on I80 west of Reno, all the way to Colfax, CA. Be prepared for some tricky maneuvering and delays if you must use this road.

It's much the same up at Lake Tahoe, but it might be a bit more tolerable if you consider that most of the projects are designed to help reduce noxious runoff into the lake and preserve its famous clarity. Elsewhere in Washoe County, across the wide open spaces of Nevada, and down in the urban jungle of Las Vegas, the road graders are rolling. Before hitting the road, read my article about road construction projects so you can be prepared for the inevitable delays and detours you will encounter.
