This weekend features a first-ever event for the Reno / Tahoe region - The Amgen Tour of California. The Reno Aces are back in town for an eight game homestand. I keep sticking my neck out about this being spring, but I really think it's going to be nice outside (except it might cool off on Sunday). Get out and enjoy it while the getting is good. Highway 50 will be closed at Echo Summit for a couple of weeks starting on Wednesday, May 11. You'll still be able to get to South Lake Tahoe, but be sure to read my Highway 50 to be closed blog post for information about detours.
If you have an event or activity you'd like to publicize for free, you can do it right here on RenoTahoe.About.com. Just go to Reno Area Events Submitted By Readers and fill out the form at the bottom of the page. Once approved, your entry will appear for Reno / Tahoe visitors to see.
Amgen Tour of California - This bicycle race is run in stages like the Tour de France. Stage one starts in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday, May 15, and ends at Northstar after a complete circuit around Lake Tahoe. Stage two starts the next day at Squaw Valley USA and goes to Sacramento. Learn more about the race and where to watch from my Amgen Tour of California article.
Reno Aces Baseball - The Reno Aces play an eight game home stand from Tuesday, May 10 through Tuesday, May 17. There will be fireworks after the Friday game and special promotions at most other games. Check out the Reno Aces Season Schedule to see what's coming up next.
Habitat Restoration at Galena Creek Visitor Center - Meet at the Visitor Center and help transform the surrounding area into a beautiful native plant interpretive garden. There will be a break for a brown bag lunch (please bring your own, and drinking water). A breakfast of donuts, coffee, and tea will be provided. Please dress in clothes that can get dirty. Contact the Galena Creek Visitor Center at (775) 849-4948 for more information. The fun is from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 14.
Free Saturday at the Nevada Museum of Art - Through 2011, the second Saturday of the month features free admission to the Nevada Museum of Art. There are several cool exhibits and other events in May, so take advantage of this chance to visit the only accredited art museum in Nevada.
Bike to Work & School Week - The Bike to Work and School Week event in Reno is designed to raise awareness of bicycle riding as a viable alternative to always driving everywhere. The idea is to encourage bicycle communting and acquaint people with the benefits of biking vs. driving. It starts on Saturday, May 14 and runs through Friday, May 20. Check out my article to learn more about participating in Bike to Work & School Week.
Spring Wings Festival in Fallon - Oats Park in Fallon (60 miles east of Reno) will be the scene for a weekend of family fun, educational workshops, craft activities, food and a variety of vendors. Guided birding tours will visit the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge to view some of the 280 bird species that have been identified in the Lahontan Valley. The festivities run from Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 15. Visit the Spring Wings website to learn more about the tours and activities.
Dragons and Dinos at the Wilbur D. May Museum - Dragons and Dinos is a family nature exhibit at the Wilbur D. May Museum in Reno's Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. Bring your children for a voyage back to the days when dinos and dragons were real. Ongoing through June 12.
