Busy weekend around Reno / Tahoe

This weekend will feature couple of Reno's popular big events - Cinco de Mayo and Earth Day at Idlewild Park. Besides these, there are quite a few other things going on as well. I think the weather is going to be nice, a pleasant change from the chilly wind we've had the last few days. Spring has had a tough time getting going around here, but I think we are on the way.

Cinco de Mayo - Reno's Cinco de Mayo Festival is northern Nevada's biggest annual celebration of Mexican heritage. It will be at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, in the southeast parking area. Admission to the event is $1. Once in, all entertainment is free. Bring the family and join the party on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Booksale Bonanza - Book Sale Bonanza is the semi-annual booksale sponsored as a fundraiser by Friends of Washoe County Library. Billed as Nevada's biggest book sale, Booksale Bonanza features over 100,000 items and runs through Sunday, May 1. Booksale Bonanza is held in the old EXCEL building at 5205 Mill Street in Reno. It is at the corner with N. Edison Street, between McCarran Blvd. and S. Rock Blvd. There is lots of free parking.

Earth Day at Idlewild Park - Idlewild Park is the setting for Reno's Annual Earth Day on Sunday, May 1. The day will feature live music, sustainability workshops, children's activities, science, technology, free recycling for stuff like cell phones and CFL bulbs, and booths with earth-friendly food, goods, and services. This fun family event is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Reno Aces Baseball - The Reno Aces take on the Tacoma Rainiers during a home series from Thursday, April 28 through Sunday, May 1. There will be fireworks after the Friday game. Sunday's game is an afternoon affair starting at 1:05 p.m. Check out the Reno Aces Season Schedule to see what's coming up next.

Dragons and Dinos at the Wilbur D. May Museum - Dragons and Dinos is a family nature exhibit at the Wilbur D. May Museum in Reno's Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. Bring your children for a voyage back to the days when dinos and dragons were real.

Learn to Ski or Snowboard - Believe it or not, most Sierra ski resorts are still open. Take advantage this winter's huge snow pack and spring conditions to learn how to downhill ski or snowboard, or get on track with cross country skiing.

Arbor Day Tree Walk and Tree Planting - Celebrate Arbor Day with a lunchtime walk among the trees led by Washoe County Horticulturist Bill Carlos. Enjoy beauty and shade while learning about local trees during this 45-minute walk through the Wilbur D. May Arboretum starting at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, April 29. A tree will be planted immediately following the tour. The tree is one of 45 being planted this spring in several Washoe County park facilities thanks to funding from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the Nevada Division of Forestry.

There is still plenty of snow around North Lake Tahoe. I was at Squaw Valley this morning, a little windy, but a great day of skiing. Come on up to Tahoe for some of winter’s last ski days.
