In what must be some kind of turnaround record, Reno's Siena Hotel Spa Casino is reopening on Monday, April 18, 2011, while some $5 million in renovations is still underway. This initial phase of the new Siena will include the restaurants, hotel, and spa, with the casino taking bets starting on April 21. The new owners are looking to create a boutique hotel with an upscale atmosphere and are rolling the dice on the success of such a property in Reno.

If you will recall, the Siena went down to bankruptcy in October, 2010, and was quickly snapped up at a fire sale price by a group that includes Jay Meilstrup, who is now the general manager. At a media tour on Tuesday, April 12, Meilstrup showed off the changes going on inside that he hopes will make this version of the Siena a winner. Basically, there will be more dining and nightlife and less emphasis on the casino. From what I saw, Meilstrup and company are jumping in with both feet and not cheaping out on the overhaul. On the outside, the building will show few changes at first - you'll see a new Siena logo and there's now a fence around the parking lot. However, an overhaul of the exterior is also in the plans. I'm hoping the new Siena is a rousing success. Reno's economy could certainly use some good news for a change.
