What's up with the flashing yellow arrows?

So you're in the left turn lane and the arrow on the signal is flashing yellow. What now? When it's safe to do so, go ahead and make your left turn. Until recently, the yellow arrow didn't flash and simply warned drivers that the left turn arrow was about to turn red, just like lights for straight through traffic.

In the first phase of an ongoing project, flashing yellow arrow signals are being implemented at 58 intersections in Reno, Sparks, Carson City, and Washoe and Douglas counties. Look for them at those intersection where left turns are permitted whenever it is safe rather than only with a green arrow. The flashing yellow arrow lets drivers know left turns are permitted when through traffic has a green light and alerts drivers to the fact that oncoming traffic isn't going to stop. Make that left turn only when it is safe to do so. Get the details at Flashing Yellow Arrows at Reno Traffic Lights.
