Ski resorts extend season

It's warming up nicely down here in the Truckee Meadows, so Lake Tahoe ski resorts will be closing soon, right? Wrong. The humongous amount of snow that buried the Sierra in March has prompted many of them to extend their season. As an extra enticement to keep skiers interested, you'll find lots of bargain rates for end-of-season passes and season passes for next winter. For example, the Unlimited Spring Pass at Mt. Rose ski area is a combo that lets you ski the rest of this season and all of the next.

In the end, spring wins even if there is still plenty of snow. People start losing interest and move on to warmer activities. Here are some closing dates I've been able to determine. Just in case, be sure to check with the resort before trying for those last days on the slopes.

  • Mt. Rose - May 6 (May 8 for passholders)
  • Squaw Valley USA - May 8 (Fridays and weekends through Memorial Day)
  • Northstar-at-Tahoe - April 24
  • Kirkwood - May 1
  • Alpine Meadows - May 15
  • Boreal - April 24 (Fridays and weekends in May)
  • Heavenly - April 24
  • Mammoth - July 4
  • Diamond Peak - ?
