More Ways to Wager Coming to a Casino Near You

As if there weren't already enough ways to place your bet, Nevada gaming rules for sports books were recently changed to allow wagers on non-sporting events. That means you may soon be able to plunk down your money on things like the Academy Awards, the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off, American Idol, and who knows what other possibilities that may pop up. The idea, of course, is to create a new source of revenue for the flagging casino industry. So far, however, the Nevada Gaming Control Board hasn't received any formal requests for such nonsporting events to be added to the sports books menu.

Will this work? Maybe, according to Bill Eadington, director of the Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming at UNR. In a quote from the Reno Gazette-Journal, Eadington said, "Can you find events that will have popular appeal and clientele that will wager on them? It's a bit of a gimmick. But it provides additional dimension. Betting like this is already available in the U.K. We've really been constrained to just sports."

When and if any new ways to wager are created, I imagine there will be plenty of advertising designed to get you and your money into Reno's casinos. One bet you can't make now will not become legal with the new rules - elections remain off limits because the outcome could potentially be affected by betting. Ever hear of throwing a fight or ballgame?

The Club Cal Neva has submitted a formal request to the Nevada Gaming Control Board (GCB) to accept wagers on American Idol. The GCB is reviewing the request, and has not yet approved or disapproved the request.
