The calendar may say the first day of spring is on Sunday, March 20, but winter weather hasn't gone away just yet. A brisk storm will pass through for the next couple of days, bringing high winds and a good dose of snow to the Lake Tahoe area and northern Sierra Nevada. Weekend travel over Donner Summit on I80 and other mountain routes is going to be an adventure.

If you are going, take the chains and be prepared for winter driving conditions. Be sure to check the road conditions and weather forecast before venturing forth.
Down here in the Truckee Meadows, stiff winds are already building as I write. The National Weather Service says we might get some snow down as low as Reno and unsettled weather is to continue into next week. I hope it doesn't get tough enough to derail the early blooming flowers that are struggling to brighten up my yard.
For us outdoor types, there is a silver lining to winter weather in spring. Once it settles down, local ski resorts will be sporting fresh power and our snow play areas will remain great places for family outings just a bit longer this season.
