The Nevada State Fair, held in Reno every year since 1874, will not be happening in 2011. Fundraising efforts over the last few months came up short in an attempt to come up with $204,000 to pay off current debt and $80,000 needed to put on the 2011 event. Fair organizers set March 8, 2011 as the decision deadline and only 13% of the needed amount had been pledged or raised by then.

According to information posted on the Nevada State Fair website, "The Board of Directors for the Nevada State Fair met on Tuesday, March 8th, 2011, and came to a decision that was difficult to make but was sadly inevitable to do. For the first time in the history of the fair (since 1874), there will not be a state fair this year, ending a 136 year run that established itself as being the longest running event in Nevada." ... This makes me wonder just how much people are going to put up with as our livelihoods and quality of life continue their slide toward oblivion. Even though the Nevada State Fair receives no public funding, I think it is a symptom of the greater malaise facing Nevada and the rest of the country. I mean, when we are reduced to fighting among ourselves for a few crumbs (low-wage jobs and formerly good paying jobs that no longer exist), it's not a good thing. When will we have had enough?
