Reno City Manager Donna Dreska announced her resignation on February 18, citing family issues that need more of her attention than her position with the city would allow. She has agreed to stay on for another 90 days. Unofficially, rumors are circulating that she is leaving due to severe financial issues facing the city government and possible auditing problems.

Dreska was chief-of-staff to previous City Manager Charles McNeely, who left in the spring of 2009. Dreska was appointed interim manager while a search was conducted for a permanent replacement. She initially said she did not want the position, but finally agreed to accept the post and had a contract until August, 2011. The Reno City Council will take up the task of appointing a replacement at an upcoming meeting, possibly on March 2.
Dreska joins a growing list of high profile officials heading for the exits. Ed Finger, Reno City Finance Director, bailed in January after only being on the job since November, 2010.. Acting Police Chief Steve Pitts has announced his intention to retire after the budget process wraps up this spring. A few weeks ago, Reno Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority (RSCVA) CEO Ellen Oppenheim suddenly quit, also citing family issues. Tim D. Smith, RSCVA Chief Financial Officer, just resigned after being with the agency since 1999.
I'm detecting a trend here. People like these usually know more about the real state of affairs than regular folks like me, so it is troubling to see so many of them abandon ship. What do you think - should we be worried?
