An unseasonably warm January has been nice for those who don't like cold winter weather, but not so good for keeping the ice in good condition at Rink on the River. It's also been a factor in declining attendance and reduced revenue. Therefore, the Rink will be closing for the season earlier than usual. February 6 (Super Bowl Sunday) will be the last day this winter to enjoy ice skating in downtown Reno. The original closing day was to be President's Day, Monday, February 21.

The city's financial condition is another factor in the decision to close early. It's costing more to keep the ice frozen when the weather isn't - closing two weeks early will save about $15,000 in operating expenses. In its press release, Reno thanked the volunteers and Club CalNeva for the support that made opening Rink on the River possible at all this season.
