According to local news reports, dealing with Nevada's shrinking state budget will be at the top of Sandoval's agenda. Other top issues Sandoval is expected to address include K-12 education, higher education, business development, pay and furloughs for state employees, and health services. Sandoval is saying little about the details of his speech, but he is expected to reiterate his no-new-taxes mantra and call for enough spending cuts to accommodate an estimated $5.3 billion in revenue projected for the next biennium (two years). The previous budget was $6.4 billion.
Legislative work on Sandoval's proposals will begin forthwith. The 76th Regular Session of the Nevada Legislature convenes in Carson City on February 7. It's going to be a session worth watching. In addition to unprecidented problems facing Nevada, the Legislature will be working with a new governor and a large number of new members coming to Carson City for the first time. Several veterans of both the Assembly and Senate won't be back due to term limits.
